Aloe-vera Gel

Aloe vera is a beneficial plant with antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. This plant can be used on our bodies, faces, and hair; we can even consume aloe vera gel. This succulent is easy to grow with minimal care.

If we want to know about the beneficial properties of aloe vera, then we first have to know about aloe vera gel. Aloe Vera gel is a thick jelly-textured material found in aloe leaves. Aloe vera leaves have three layers:

  1. Outer green layer is aloe vera rind,
  2. Bitter-yellowish layer is aloe vera latex, and
  3. Innermost jelly-textured layer is aloe vera gel.

From this gel, we can make different kinds of aloe vera drinks, oil of aloe vera, aloe vera powder, aloe vera spray, aloe vera shampoo and conditioner, aloe vera butter, aloe vera body wash, aloe vera soap and so on.

How to prepare aloe vera gel

When using Aloe Vera gel for health care, skin care, or hair care, the gel must be processed a little bit first. Following are the steps to get aloe vera jelly from the leaves.

  1. First, choose a matured leaf from the plant and cut it near its joint with the plant.
  2. Wash the leaf properly and keep it standing, holding the cut side below for 15-20 minutes. This process will eliminate latex from the gel, which can irritate some people.
  3. Now, take a sharp knife and cut off the spiky edges of the leaf.
  4. After removing both edges, peel the outer layer and scrape the aloe vera gel using a spoon.
  5. Rinse the gel under running water to eliminate the yellowish latex.
  6. Blend the aloe Vera gel using a blender or food processor, and finally, after straining, transfer it to an air-tight box and store it in the refrigerator.

“Does aloe vera gel expire?”

The answer is yes.

Nothing comes in this world with expiration. If you bought it from the store, it must have an expiry date on its label. Usually, the date is about two to three years from its production date. On the other hand, aloe vera gel extracted from the plant at home can be used for about 1-2 weeks by keeping it in the refrigerator. But always check its smell, color, and texture before using it.
